National Bed Federation End-of-Life Mattress Report 2022

The NBF's fourth report on UK mattress disposal shows mixed results. Recycling rates have more than doubled in eight years, reaching around 24%. Industry take-back schemes have also more than tripled, and local authorities are implementing initiatives to divert mattress disposals from landfill towards circular recycling. However, the actual recycling rate after processing remains low at 14%. There are still barriers to improving these figures, and achieving the target of 75% landfill diversion by 2028 seems challenging. Despite the pandemic and economic shocks, progress is being made in developing circular business models focused on recycling, collection services, and sustainable design.

This report offers insights for manufacturers, customers, suppliers, recyclers, authorities, and regulators on the current state, future direction, and actionable suggestions. It highlights collaboration opportunities between governments, waste industry, and bed industry for a greener future with reduced waste and maximised resource value.
