Other initiatives

Our work with the NBF (National Bed Federation) in the furniture and furnishings sector. We have been producing their end-of-life mattress reports for many years. They showcase the sector's performance in that year and where the circularity priorities are. See our latest report: https://www.oakdenehollins.com/reports/2023/10/3/national-bed-federation-end-of-life-mattress-report-2022

The research focused on areas of potential reputational risk to the NBF and its members, namely:

• Current progress towards, and likelihood of achieving, the 75% landfill diversion by 2028 target.

• Insight into the onward markets for components and materials recovered from End of Life (EoL) mattresses to inform assessments of the environmental benefits of these practices (e.g. UK specific mattress LCAs).

• Current and likely future mattress recycling capacity and risks to and opportunities for growth in the sector.

For maximum relevance, the research was conducted through the lens of a sector preparing for the likely introduction of an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme.

Silentnight, a mattress manufacturer, partnered with Oakdene Hollins on their sustainability journey since 2017. The collaboration began with the analysis of data to develop an award-winning sustainability application, leading to Silentnight winning the industry sustainability award in November 2017.

In 2019, Oakdene Hollins supported Silentnight in developing a comprehensive sustainability strategy aligned with the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs). This involved supply chain engagement, cross-departmental meetings, and mapping hotspots for focused efforts. The outcome included the establishment of an internal sustainability committee and board buy-in for further initiatives.

“At Silentnight Group, we recognise the importance of sustainability. Knowing the size of the challenge, we are going to start by thoroughly understanding our operations, sites and materials relationship with the environment with the aim that we and our staff are equipped with the motivation and knowledge, to enact meaningful, sustainable changes to production. Oakdene Hollins have been a pivotal part of this.” – Angela Moran, Director of ESG at Silentnight Group.

In 2021, Oakdene Hollins conducted a cradle-to-gate product carbon footprinting analysis for three Silentnight products, providing a tool to quantify the carbon impact. As Silentnight aimed to embed sustainability in their business growth plan in 2022, Oakdene Hollins conducted a baseline scope 1-3 carbon assessment. This laid the foundation for science-based targets, with suggested actions and educational support for the Silentnight team.

Silentnight's commitment to sustainability played a pivotal role in securing a contract with Premier Inn in 2022. Notably, the removable mattress topper and 92% recyclability of Silentnight's products aligned with Premier Inn's Force for Good ESG plans. The partnership has been instrumental in ensuring the sustainability and supportiveness of Premier Inn's beds.

Oakdene Hollins continues to support Silentnight in achieving certification through the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) by annually quantifying emissions. The collaboration includes ongoing carbon footprinting, product life cycle assessments (LCAs), bespoke research, holistic sustainability strategy development, employee upskilling, board engagement, and personal support to the ESG team. The strong relationship and support provided by Oakdene Hollins have been integral to Silentnight's sustainability journey.

"Collaborating with Oakdene Hollins is always an absolute pleasure. The team has been consistently available to answer our queries and help us enhance our internal knowledge. We are amazed by their impressive expertise, creativity and dedication towards their work. With their deep understanding of our business operations, they have left a lasting impression on us. We are excited to continue our relationship with them.” - Angela Moran, Director of ESG at Silentnight Group.

Frequently Carbon Footprint questions?

    • Scope 1: Direct emissions from your own operations (e.g., fuel combustion, manufacturing processes).

    • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy (e.g., electricity, heat).

    • Scope 3: All other indirect emissions across your value chain (e.g., business travel, purchased goods and services).

  • A comprehensive understanding of your entire carbon footprint allows for a more holistic approach to emissions reduction. Scope 3 emissions often represent a significant portion of an organization's total footprint, and addressing them can unlock significant environmental and financial benefits.

  • A net zero strategy outlines a clear pathway for your organization to achieve net zero emissions, balancing your greenhouse gas emissions with removals. This often involves a combination of emissions reduction strategies, renewable energy integration, and carbon offsetting.

  • There are numerous benefits to achieving net zero, including mitigating climate change, enhancing your brand reputation, improving operational efficiency, and future-proofing your business for a low-carbon economy.

  • The timeframe for achieving net zero will vary depending on your organization's current emissions profile, industry, and ambitiousness of your goals. We will work with you to establish realistic and achievable targets within your defined timeframe.

  • Contact Oakdene Hollins today for a free consultation. We will discuss your sustainability goals, answer your questions, and outline how we can partner with you on your journey to net zero.
