Furniture & Mattress Sustainability Benchmark Report

The UK Furniture Sector Is Moving from Intent to Action

We are pleased to share our Furniture and Mattress Sustainability Benchmark Report 2025, which offers the most comprehensive picture yet of how sustainability is evolving across the UK furniture and mattress sector. By reviewing public disclosures from 29 major companies, gathering targeted survey responses, and engaging in conversations across the value chain, we see a sector increasingly ready to turn ambition into meaningful action.

Clear Priorities and Strong Signals of Progress

Every company we surveyed considers sustainability essential to long-term success. Resource and energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and circular design consistently feature as top priorities. This reflects increased customer interest, with 78% of companies reporting requests for sustainability data in the past year, as well as the growing influence of UK and EU regulations.

We also see encouraging momentum:58% of companies have active programmes to improve resource and energy efficiency. Many organisations are investing in carbon measurement, data quality, renewable electricity, and more circular design approaches that reduce waste and create value.

Opportunities in Carbon, Circularity, and Biodiversity

While companies are at different stages of maturity, we see clear opportunities for the sector to accelerate together.

  • Carbon management continues to strengthen: 62% of companies measure their Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and with 17% already setting science-aligned targets, we have significant room to help many more follow suit.

  • Circularity is gaining traction, with 28% of companies operating refurbishment or take-back schemes and 31% incorporating recycled content. This creates a foundation for new business models and more resilient supply chains.

  • Biodiversity is becoming an essential area of focus. 83% percent of companies already source timber under responsible forestry certification, and many are expanding their nature-related initiatives. This presents a powerful opportunity to lead on responsible sourcing and nature-positive action.

A Sector Ready to Work Together

One of the strongest messages emerging from the report is the appetite for collaboration. Companies are increasingly keen to share learning, explore common standards, and develop shared approaches to circularity that benefit the entire value chain. This collaborative energy can help accelerate progress, reduce costs, and make sustainable solutions more widely accessible.

As we note in the report:

“The sector is moving from intent to implementation. Companies that act now on carbon, circularity, and biodiversity will not only meet regulatory demands but also unlock real competitive advantage.”

Why This Moment Matters

The UK furniture and mattress sector operates in a landscape shaped by rising customer expectations, evolving regulations, and increasing resource pressures. Sustainability is now central to competitiveness and long-term resilience. Organisations that invest early are already benefiting from cost savings, stronger supply chain relationships, and new market opportunities linked to circularity and carbon reduction.
