Ecodesign Principles for Mattresses

In the current legislative climate, ecodesign is very high on the agenda, especially for energy consuming products. Though mattresses may not fall under this category, they do have high environmental impacts, which draws attention to them. Aside from the legislative view towards them, social, market/customer and organisational considerations are important, though may be fed by concerns outside of the banner of environmental.

Mattress industry members were facing a similar situation with the growing consumer awareness of environmental considerations as well as a potential EPR scheme and other regulatory changes. Our project here involved developing a set of ecodesign principles that a trade association could commit to, which would also serve as a practical set of guidelines for businesses to approach ecodesign.  Input from a high-level academic organisation was also sought to ensure that the ecodesign principles developed tied in with current best practice.

Ecodesign principles can be applied to a large range of products. If you are looking to be proactive in improving the environmental credentials of a product, get in touch with our team to find out how our knowledge and experience can support you.
