What are Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions?

Scope 1 emissions:

Direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that occur from sources that are controlled or owned by an organisation.

Scope 2 emissions:

Indirect GHG emissions associated with the purchase of electricity, steam, heat or cooling.

Scope 3 emissions:

The result of activities from assets not owned or controlled by an organisation.

Whilst the emissions from your own internal operations are important, the biggest carbon impacts and cost reduction opportunities are often generated outside of your direct control. Understanding your company’s Scope 3 emissions is complex as they are wide ranging and typically sit outside your immediate influence.

SBTi

Even though 70% of the global economy is committed to becoming net-zero, there is still confusion over ‘net zero’ and the level of action required. Science-based targets are key for companies with a net zero ambition. Whilst many companies and governments have released long-term goals to 2050, these come with uncertainty. Science-based targets represent near- and long-term commitments, ensuring short-term action is taken to reduce emissions at a pace consistent with your overall net zero goal.

At Oakdene Hollins, we are dedicated in our mission to help businesses limit their 1-3 carbon scope emissions to help mitigate the effects of climate change.

Other initiatives

Silentnight, a mattress manufacturer, partnered with Oakdene Hollins on their sustainability journey since 2017. The collaboration began with the analysis of data to develop an award-winning sustainability application, leading to Silentnight winning the industry sustainability award in November 2017.

In 2019, Oakdene Hollins supported Silentnight in developing a comprehensive sustainability strategy aligned with the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs). This involved supply chain engagement, cross-departmental meetings, and mapping hotspots for focused efforts. The outcome included the establishment of an internal sustainability committee and board buy-in for further initiatives.

“At Silentnight Group, we recognise the importance of sustainability. Knowing the size of the challenge, we are going to start by thoroughly understanding our operations, sites and materials relationship with the environment with the aim that we and our staff are equipped with the motivation and knowledge, to enact meaningful, sustainable changes to production. Oakdene Hollins have been a pivotal part of this.” – Angela Moran, Director of ESG at Silentnight Group.

In 2021, Oakdene Hollins conducted a cradle-to-gate product carbon footprinting analysis for three Silentnight products, providing a tool to quantify the carbon impact. As Silentnight aimed to embed sustainability in their business growth plan in 2022, Oakdene Hollins conducted a baseline scope 1-3 carbon assessment. This laid the foundation for science-based targets, with suggested actions and educational support for the Silentnight team.

Silentnight's commitment to sustainability played a pivotal role in securing a contract with Premier Inn in 2022. Notably, the removable mattress topper and 92% recyclability of Silentnight's products aligned with Premier Inn's Force for Good ESG plans. The partnership has been instrumental in ensuring the sustainability and supportiveness of Premier Inn's beds.

Oakdene Hollins continues to support Silentnight in achieving certification through the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) by annually quantifying emissions. The collaboration includes ongoing carbon footprinting, product life cycle assessments (LCAs), bespoke research, holistic sustainability strategy development, employee upskilling, board engagement, and personal support to the ESG team. The strong relationship and support provided by Oakdene Hollins have been integral to Silentnight's sustainability journey.

"Collaborating with Oakdene Hollins is always an absolute pleasure. The team has been consistently available to answer our queries and help us enhance our internal knowledge. We are amazed by their impressive expertise, creativity and dedication towards their work. With their deep understanding of our business operations, they have left a lasting impression on us.
